The old scanners worked fine with a amplified speaker plugged in the headphone jack. The jack the on the sds100 is dummied down so low a amplified speaker don't help much. If you type a lower-case ASCII charactor from a limited set (dhlmoqrwz), several lines of formatted ASCII numbers are sent from the scanner. This looks like engineering debugging output rather than a customer feature. The sub-processor appears to be a NXP LPC4370. Without the lock symbol printed next to the power button it could cause a lot of confusion when the keypad stopped responding after being locked. Ironically in early versions of Sentinel you could set the "Keypad Lock" option to On for the SDS100 and the keypad would be actually be locked after writing to the scanner so *part* of the keyboard ...The SDS's most likely do too. A small separate rechargeable coin like battery that was just to keep the clock going. Normally, they should last a least a few weeks to a few months if the main battery is dead. I soldered wires to the three pins on the USB plug first and then soldered the 3 different sets of wires to the leads. Solder the bare wires together. The white wires are not used.
